The ECHO asked the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for details of the risks of sildenafil, and how the agency will assess the risks.A representative from Dr Andrew Witty said: “We are concerned about the increased likelihood of adverse events associated with the use of sildenafil, and we are taking steps to ensure that this information is accessible to patients and doctors.
“As there is no assurance that sildenafil will cause serious or life-threatening side effects, any adverse events we hear about in the press are products of product liability.”

Sildenafil is sold under the brand names Viagra and Cialis. It was first approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the UK in 1998.

A separate report from 2016 found that Viagra, Cialis and Staxyn were the most commonly prescribed medications on the market in the UK.

“Sildenafil has not been associated with increased side effects such as flushing, headache, muscle pain and headaches. It should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disorders.”
